EPFO Extends ECR Filing & Statutory Contribution Due Date for September 2026

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has officially issued a circular extending the due date for filing the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and remitting statutory contributions for the wage month of September 2026.

This extension provides crucial relief to employers, establishments, and payroll administrators navigating recent regulatory changes.

Key Highlights of the EPFO Circular

  • Revised Due Date: The deadline for filing the ECR and remitting contributions for September 2026 has been extended from 15.10.2026 to 31.10.2026.

  • Applicability: All establishments covered under the Code on Social Security, 2020, and its framed schemes.

  • Exclusivity: This extension applies exclusively to the wage month of September 2026 and does not alter timelines for any other wage months.

Why Was the Extension Granted?

The wage ceiling limit was revised effective from 17.09.2026. Because this change took effect mid-month, establishments faced significant technical, operational, and administrative hurdles in adjusting their payroll configurations, employee-wise contribution computations, and pay-bill records.

Taking cognizance of multiple representations from employers and stakeholders, the competent authority approved this extension to facilitate orderly statutory compliance without undue pressure.

Action Required for Employers & HR Teams

Field offices across regions have been advised to inform local establishments and ensure smooth facilitation. Employers are encouraged to complete their payroll system updates and file their ECRs on or before the revised deadline of 31.10.2026.
